May saw the return of the Martin House annual Dragon Boat race at Roundhay Park, and with only one week to prepare, RFM Group employees were determined to enter a team. The theme of Willy Wonka and the Oompa Loompas was quickly agreed and the eleven strong team came together at Roundhay Park in the name of charity. After a brief training session the Oompa Loompas took their positions in the precarious dragon boat, with Willy Wonka perched at the bow beating his drum to keep the pace for the rowing. The team competed against companies such as O2, HSBC, Yorkshire Building Society, GE and Direct Line. Willy Wonka’s team competed in three heats and, despite almost capsizing on more than one occasion achieved one of the top 5 best times of the day which secured a place in the semi-finals. A great day was had by all, and the RFM Group finished seventh place overall out of the 37 teams that entered. Over £600 was raised for Martin House. RFM Group Managing Director, Ian Flanagan said: “Participating in this year’s Dragon Boat race was great fun and a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the local community. I’m really proud that the team managed to raise such a significant amount for Martin House Children’s Hospice, the company’s chosen charity and one which is very much close to our hearts.”
