In 2018, we were delighted to complete a three-phase refurbishment at Emerald Publishing Group headquarters in Bingley, West Yorkshire.
Phase One included a brand-new gymnasium, shower rooms and break out areas. Phase Two RFM Group were commissioned to renovate an old conference room into a superb new restaurant and commercial premises, called ‘Brew’ only serving nutritious food and drink and the walls decorated with famous album covers, with the final phase seeing a further new breakout area and seating for employees to take time away from the office, with a main wall including a mural designed by Emerald employees following an internal competition.

David our Marketing Coordinator sat down with Asif Afsar, Marketing Executive and Amy Jeffery, Internal Communications to provide us with a key insight into how these facilities have impacted their working environment.
1. Please can you tell us a little bit about your own roles at Emerald?
Asif: Working as Marketing Executive, I get involved with all aspects of Marketing which include social, branding, author requests, promotional events, leaflet publishing, paid advertising and web page creation.
Amy: Working in the internal communications department, my role includes distributing communications including newsletters and email campaigns.
2. How have the new facilities benefited your work place culture, productivity, motivation and work life balance?
Asif: It feels like we are one family now. Where ever you go, whether it be the gym, Brew or pool table, there is a positive buzz and atmosphere. There is extra flexibility. All our facilities are open early morning to late evening which is fantastic for flexibility.
Amy: Before these facilities, I had to rush to the gym either before, during or after work whereas now I can completely integrate it into my day. They’ve made a fantastic impact, especially Brew. We have charity tuck shop in the cafe which is a fantastic asset to have. I also have the option of the gym which can relive stress.
3. Which of the new facilities is your favourite and why?
Asif: Definitely the gym! It is there whenever I want and its perfect for the end of the day when I just want my own time. It is a fantastic facility and asset to have.
Amy: Brew! Providing excellent food and suitable for all employees. It feels like you are escaping from the office which is great for work-life balance and taking some time away from my desk which helps relieve stress and is great for socialising.
4. Airedale House was completed in time for your annual ‘Emerald Live’ conference so that you could show employees from across the world your new facilities. What were the general feelings and feedback you initially got on that day?
Asif: Very positive! It was brand-new and very exciting for everyone involved. We were blown away from the feedback. RFM Group were very professional when it came to the deadline as there was a week gap between the facilities and the live conference taking place.
5. How efficient did RFM Group make the refurbishment project?
Asif: There were daily communications within the group whilst these facilities were taking shape, with daily meetings and catch ups with our site manager. The overall live projects were managed very well with minimal disruption to our working lives. there was great excitement within the company as everyone was very intrigued to see what it was going to be like.
