Marton Mills

The Brief

Marton Mills is a family-owned company established in 1931.

Their textiles include a stock-supported range of pure wool tartans and Shetland tweeds, as well as a range of blends which are used to create their industry-leading fabrics. All are woven in West Yorkshire, an area which has been world-famous since the 18th century for producing high-quality textiles.

As part of a significant investment they wanted to radically improve their office and work environment.

The RFM Group were appointed by Marton Mills to carry out a major office refurbishment as the main contractor.

Their existing office space was tired and in desperate need of an upgrade. RFM had a client specification to follow which included a change of the existing layout, new suspended ceilings, and some glazed partitions.

Our Approach

During the strip-out, we removed the ceilings and uncovered huge original Crittall windows that flooded the space with light, and 5.7m high ceilings with exposed structural steelwork.

Our client asked if there was something we could do with the design to get the most out of the space and maximise the amount of light coming in.

Using our in-house architectural technician, we went ‘back to the drawing board’ with a full re-design.

We produced a full set of building regulations drawings using Autodesk Revit, allowing 3D models to be produced so the client could visualise the space and what we were proposing.

The new design comprised of an IT store, boardroom, 2 directors’ offices, Accounts, Design, Quality Control, and an open-plan sales floor in the centre.

We sand-blasted walls to expose the original brickwork bringing in different textures to the finish.

New split circle air conditioning was installed in the open elements of the office with electric panel heaters to the directors’ offices, boardroom, and kitchen.

We also undertook a full electric and data re-wire and data cabinet upgrade.

Outcome

Utilising our in-house experts and our vetted specialist supply chain we delivered an awe-inspiring fit-out. The original project was expanded on discovering the building’s greater potential and as such, we redesigned the workspace to accommodate the original windows, steel and exposed brickwork. The office design complimented the impressive industrial building and heritage of the company. Additional works were also undertaken including the creation of a staff breakout kitchen, new toilets and washrooms, replacement floors and ceilings and a refreshed reception and hallway.

RFM are extremely proud to have partnered with Marton Mills to design a truly unique and bespoke workplace for their talented workforce.

Royal Visit to Marton Mills

During the renovation works, the property was visited by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in her capacity as President of the UK Fashion & Textile Association (UKFT). The tour provided a comprehensive overview of their commitment to quality, sustainability and innovation. From the creation of bespoke fabrics with their in-house design service to the intricate processes of yarn preparation, warping and weaving, every aspect of production reflects our unwavering dedication to excellence.

Although the renovations were not complete at the time of the visit the plans and designs were presented to Her Royal Highness, who was impressed with Marton Mills’ vision for growth and investment in their people and their workplace.
